Karen Burniston's November Sizzix Challenge

This month Karen Burniston offered to let me play along again with her  Sizzix Designer Challenge: Crafting RED with Stitched Framelits.  THEN she offered to send me her Snippets Collection, so I would have lots of her 'Stitched Framelets' to play with! (THANKS Karen B!!).

For some reason, when she said 'RED' I immediately knew I wanted to pair it with Kraft and also use the Tim Holtz Old Jalopy die for a birthday card.

The card base was cut using Karen's Square Pop 'N Cut Base with Ornate Edge, and her Sassy Label insert. I have a new favourite insert - move over Wavy Label.  :-)))

The red and black card stock I used is Stardream, so it has this beautiful pearlized finish to it. Even though it is fairly heavy weight, the Framelits cut through them with no issue at all, and I LOVE the look of the stitched edges. I especially love that the stitches are on their own die, so can be used independently. Brilliant.

To get the black 'mat', I cut a Sassy Label Framelit three times. Once from Kraft card stock and twice from black Stardream. Then I off-set the black ones behind the Kraft one for a matted, shadowed effect.

I cut two more of the same sized Framelits from red Stardream, ran them through the big shot again with the Sassy Label Stitched Framelits, then cut the centers away from both. That gave me two 'hinge' pieces for the front and two for the inside.

I'm so happy with how the Jalopy looks when cut out of red! (I think I may cut and assemble a bunch of them to have on hand to use for  Senior Secret Service birthday cards!)

There is a lot going on with this card, so I took lots of photos.

First, I embossed the top edge of the Kraft inside piece with one of Karen's new embossing folders - Sassy and Circle Label Textured Impressions Embossing Folders  These are meant to emboss around the edge of the insert piece (again, I say ... brilliant), but I just wanted the top edge embossed with the chevron pattern. I liked that it gave me that embossed semi circle at the top center.

Since I'm a paper hoarder, no WAY could I just toss all the little bits that pop out when you cut Karen's new Chevron Border.  I added two of them at the top to mimic arrows pointing to the birthday words.  The words were stamped on my very FAVOURITE label in the Sassy Label and Stitched Framelit set ... the smallest one. I'm going to get a LOT of use out of that one!

I added two corduroy brads to the remaining two 'hinges' and attached them over the embossed area at the top of the card. Then, I cut one of her borders (Banner and Border Thinlit set) from red Stardream and 'hung' it from the brads. I had also cut a black Stardream border which I didn't end up using, but I DID save the little bit that came out of the center and popped it up inside the red border with foam tape.

The Jalopy has a transparency behind the windows - backed with a piece of Kraft card stock and I like how it catches the light when the card is turned.

The Chevron border tucks nicely under and around the Sassy Label pop up portion. then I attached the Jalopy with Glue Dots.

While it's hard to see in the photo, I didn't want the white background of the Kraft printed paper showing through the inside openings for the pop up. I cut a piece of Kraft card stock large enough to cover the opening and embossed it with the Chevron embossing folder - same one as at the top of the card.

This card will be going into my stash for one of the special men we have in our life.
