Karen Burniston's April Designer Challenge Card #1

Good morning friends

Welcome to Karen Burniston's April 2016 Designer Challenge ... The Great Outdoors. There were so many directions I wanted to go for this challenge, but when I spied the BBQ patterned paper in my stash I knew what I wanted to make. That happens frequently, the patterned paper ends up being my inspiration.

With Baker the Beaver holding onto a watermelon slice and the red gingham paper, you get a glimpse of the card theme.

I added some pen-work on the Square with Circle Frame Edges, and the scallop banners were cut twice - once from red card stock and once from green. I saved the green banners for another project, but inlaid the green negative pieces into the red frame for a more solid look.

Inside is the Adirondack Chair Pop-Up. I love that one - it's just so effective! Every single time I give a card with the Adirondack Chair inside people say WOW.  I also love doing it in red and it worked well with the colours of my BBQ themed patterned paper.

Some of the elements were fussy cut from a scrap of the patterned paper and added back onto the card, including the hot dog on a stick that Baker is holding onto. I chuckled all while making this card - Baker is just so fun. He is also wearing sunglasses. The sun is from the Oval Pull Card and the grass is from the Outdoor Edges.

I used the Stage it Stencil Partly Cloudy (yes, again) but this time I used the stencil the way I used to when our kids were little. Simply tracing around the inside edge of the shape. I love the variety of looks you can get from these stencils. After tracing, I added colour with Copics.

Finally, here is the side view so you can see the Pop-Up portion a little better.

Be sure to check out what the rest of the Designer Challenge Team has come up with for this fun challenge - their blogs are all linked on the right of my blog. Karen Burniston will have her post on her blog on Wednesday.

  3. I have GOT to get the Adirondack die. Between you and Shelly in the challenge, you've firmly dragged me in. After seeing your red chair, I started thinking about how I could make this into an upholstered chair. That way, I have two uses for it.

Just love your card, everything is just so cute, the sun glasses, the hot dog on the stick, the gingham. To me, gingham is just so picnic and kitchen! The more I see cards with Baker, the more he and his kitchen props are firmly in line behind Chilly & Duster on my wish list.

I have SO got to do a version of this card. I have grill dies, marshmallows on a stick dies, hot dogs AND more than one glasses die, surely one will fit Baker! Now, just to get both dies! :)

    1. Hi Angie - thank you for the comment! Yes, that Adirondack chair is SO fun. You can change it up as well, as you are already thinking about. The paddle arms are separate pieces so they can easily be trimmed to a different shape if you require. Baker the Beaver is quickly becoming one of my favourite characters so I'm confident you will enjoy him too. :-) Have a great day!
