Loom Knit Scarflet and Hat

Once the craft sale was over,  I needed to just sit and knit something. Something that could be worked up fairly quickly as I was looking for instant gratification.

I found the pattern for this "Lacey Scarflet" by Brenda Myers and pulled out one of my Knifty Knitter looms. This was knit with 2 strands of yarn, one soft green #4 weight and one very thin yarn with tiny sequins. I seem to be addicted to this shade of green these days.

As I was finishing up the scarflet, we got word that a bitter cold snap was going to hit and I decided that I needed to make a matching hat!

The hat turned out pretty good, but I did end up doing a double crochet border around the brim as it made the hat a little deeper. Plus, I can fold up the back a little and I like the shape that gives the hat. I added the fun flower, since flowers on hats seem to be really 'in' right now.

The pattern for the flower can be found HERE - it's the Be Happy flower.  You can get a look at the tiny sequins in the following photo.

Not only does this hat and scarflet set make me happy just looking at it (must be that cheery green), but the hat is nice and warm. Believe me -- in this weather a warm hat is a necessity!

Thanks for stopping by today.

  3. The set is very lovely and I love the design.
I found one similar to yours many, many years ago at a craft sale. I've lost the hat along the way, but I still have the scarflet.

  5. Hi! I found this blog though google, I am just beginning to knit (tonight, actually). My best friend was diagnosed with cancer recently, and has already lost her hair from her chemo treatments. I love this hat and scarflet, and I know she will, too. Thanks for sharing! The brim of the hat is unique, I like the added depth it gives the hat. I guess I will need to learn what a "double crochet border" is, and how to do it, but I'm up for the adventure. Thanks for sharing your cute ideas!

  7. I came across some looms a year ago and fiddled with them a bit but this winter I've really dove in feet first. I've already made two pairs of socks and several cowels along with some scarves. My mother gave me a hat recently that was crocheted (which I don't do) and had a brim much like the one you have on yours. I'm curious do you have instructions on how to make yours on the loom? I love yours and how it looks and am hoping to make one for my Mom this winter.

  8. Hi April - thanks for you comments. Good for you to have tackled socks - I'm not brave enough for those. Brenda's pattern for the scarf can be found here: http://loomlady.blogspot.ca/2007/01/lacey-scarflet-touch-of-love-on-looms.html
I've made it a number of times with different weights of yarn and it always turns out wonderful.
Also, I've moved my Loom Knitting onto it's own blog (www.loomknitting.blogspot.ca) so you can find me there. Life was crazy for many months and I'm just now getting back into looming to help keep me sane and calm.
Hope your Mom loves her gift!
    all the best

  9. Hi Karen, I wasn't expecting a reply back so early thank you! I checked out that link you sent but it's for the scarf and I was looking for instructions on the hat. Here is the link to the sock video I followed, it's pretty easy to understand. http://youtu.be/sIYrx8Zs7v0 I came across your blog last night but will have to check it out even more now. I don't know if this is calm and keeps me sane or not but it sure passes the time while waiting for my kids to get out of school. That and a good audio book!
    Thank you again Karen.

    1. April - I don't have a pattern for the hat. I hardly ever use a hat pattern. I just knit the brim, then use whatever stitch appeals me for the rest of the hat. I knit it the length I want, which depends on the yarn used - then cast off, again - that depends on the yarn and stitch used. Looks like I probably used a figure 8 stitch for this hat, which you can do a search for. I got it from a Loom Knitting book, but they are still packed so I can't tell you which one. This was probably the only time I used a double crochet border on the brim once the hat was finished but I was happy with how it turned out. When we were packing up the house, this hat and scarlet were kept out in case the weather turned before we unpacked. (It did). The pattern for the flower (which is pinned on) is in the blog post. Oh, and thanks for the sock video!

I suggest you just play (and take notes!).

    1. I didn't use a pattern for the hat, I usually just wing it when looming hats. I assume since you wanted the pattern though, you must have liked it so thank you.
